Mastodon returned to Grand Rapids for an amazing show at 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids, MI on October 11, 2017. A great band that has been growing pretty quickly the last few years, after years of slogging, and playing tons of show, releasing amazing albums.
They’re not afraid to prog-out, which they showed right away, opening their set with “The Last Baron”, almost 14 minutes of proggy metal, from their 2009 album Crack The Skye.
It’s really cool for the band to have three singers, as they all bring totally different voices to the songs. It’s kind of boring when bands have multiple singers, but they all scream in similar ways, there’s no variety. But all three singers have very distinct voices. The songs are amazing, complex, and cover a wide variety of topics, which is really cool.
If you don’t have their latest, Emperor Of Sand, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It’s a great album, and their behind the scenes video from the making of the album is a great watch, too.
